Photographer captures bride’s hidden illness, and wedding takes horrific turn

What Jill Hadad Hawkins thought would be the happiest day of her life quickly spiraled into a nightmare. Like many brides, she anticipated her wedding day with excitement and joy. However, the morning of her big day took an unexpected turn when she began experiencing severe stomach pain.

At first, Jill brushed it off as pre-wedding jitters. It seemed reasonable to assume that the anxiety and excitement surrounding the wedding were causing her discomfort. She convinced herself to push through, determined to make it down the aisle. Smiling through the pain, she hoped it would eventually fade as the day progressed. But unfortunately, the pain only worsened.

Despite feeling progressively worse, Jill managed to say “I do” and proceed with her wedding. But not long after the reception, she was rushed to the hospital, where her condition took a serious and frightening turn.

A Hidden Health Condition

Jill had a history of ulcerative colitis, a chronic form of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) that causes inflammation and sores in the digestive tract. Ulcerative colitis typically affects the innermost lining of the large intestine and rectum, leading to a host of uncomfortable and painful symptoms. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms usually develop gradually over time rather than appearing suddenly.

As a teenager, Jill underwent several surgeries to treat her condition. She believed those surgeries had resolved the issue and had no reason to suspect that her wedding-day pain could be related to her past medical struggles. The thought of her illness making a return didn’t even cross her mind.

The Emergency at the Hospital

After arriving at the hospital, doctors immediately took action. Jill’s condition was far more critical than anyone had imagined. Dr. James Yoo, chief of colorectal surgery at Tufts Medical Center, was the one who treated her. He explained that Jill had experienced a rare and dangerous twist in her intestines, a condition that had cut off the blood supply to the affected area.

“She could have died from that,” Dr. Yoo told WCVB in an interview. The doctor stressed that there was no way Jill could have predicted or prevented this sudden medical emergency, calling it “just bad luck.” Thankfully, the emergency procedure performed on Jill was successful, and Dr. Yoo reassured her that she would go on to “live happily ever after.”

Reflecting on the Ordeal

After surviving the terrifying health scare, Jill reflected on how close she had come to tragedy on what was supposed to be the happiest day of her life. “It’s really hard to come to terms with the fact that I could have died on my wedding night,” she told WCVB. “But that’s the reality.”

Her wedding, which had been beautifully captured by photographers, took a heartbreaking turn. Despite the radiant smile she displayed in her wedding photos, Jill was silently battling through intense pain that no one could see. Her medical emergency turned what should have been a day of celebration into a moment of crisis.

A Reminder of Life’s Fragility

Jill’s experience serves as a stark reminder that life’s most joyous occasions can sometimes be overshadowed by unexpected challenges. Thankfully, quick medical intervention and expert care saved her life. Her story resonated with many, highlighting the importance of not ignoring our bodies when something feels off.

Though her wedding day didn’t go as planned, Jill’s survival is a testament to the unpredictability of life and the value of timely medical attention. She emerged from the ordeal with a new perspective on health, appreciating the life she nearly lost.
